Lunar Eclipses

Eclipse of the Moon on 28th October 2004

This was a bright eclipse with rich rusty colours. Even at the height of totality the Moon did not pass through the centre of the Earth’s shadow so the north limb remained quite bright.

The partial phase after totality. The edge of the umbra is much bluer than the reddish tones seen further in.

Eclipse of the Moon on 3rd April 1996

.. showing a deep partial eclipse shortly before totality began.

Photographed with a 200mm telephoto lens and 2x teleconverter, 2s exposure at f8 on 400 iso film. This eclipse was doubly notable as it gave an opportunity to see Comet Hyakutake in a dark sky in the middle of the full moon period.
